Chapter 702: Can Confucian Governance Be Used To Govern A Country? [Please Subscribe, Please Order I

After a long time, the roars of more than 7,000 scholars gradually subsided.

However, although the voice subsided, the hearts stirred by slogans such as "Recast the new glory of Confucianism and create new glory of Confucianism" and "It is our duty to recast the glory of Confucianism" became increasingly hot and restless. .

All the talented scholars looked at Cang Jie on the high platform with burning eyes, looking forward to how Cang Jie would lead them to "recast Confucianism's new glory and create Confucianism's new glory!!!"

As long as Cang Jie can really do this, then it is not impossible for them to recognize Cang Jie as the new Confucian literary saint!!!

On the high platform, Yan Changqing looked at the Confucian scholars whom he had stirred up, and said with a faint smile on his lips:

"I want to recast the new glory of Confucianism and create new glory for Confucianism!"

"Then we need to know what is the current status of Confucianism and what are the current shortcomings of Confucianism!!"

"Only then can we know where Confucianism should make breakthroughs, and then we can recreate Confucianism's new glory!!!"

There is a story about Confucian scholars at the bottom. Everyone nodded after hearing this.

These words are reasonable and worthy of the literary sage Cang Jie.

At the same time, all the Confucian scholars were more and more looking forward to getting up in response to what Wen Sheng Cang Jie said next.

"When we talk about Confucian governance, what exactly are we talking about?!!"

"Shi Renzheng?!!"

"Government by virtue?!"

“A heavy emphasis on rituals and music?!”

"It's these, but it's not just these!!!"

"However, whether it is these or other current Confucian political opinions outside of these, it is just an ideological concept of governing the country!!!"

"So, can this kind of ideological concept of governing the country be able to govern the country?!!"

Having said this, Yan Changqing paused and gave the Confucian scholars a moment to think.

The more than 7,000 Confucian scholars below heard the vague doubts in the words of the literary saint Cang Jie, and looked at each other.

【What does Wentu Cang Jie mean? Eat!!】

[Could it be that the Wen Sheng Cang Jie still wants to overthrow the current Confucian ideas of governing the country?!!]

[Hiss, if this is really the case, if it really overthrows the Confucian ideas of "benevolent government", "moral governance", and "ritual and music" in governing the country, then is this still Confucianism?!!]

[No!!! Absolutely not! If Mr. Cang Jie really has such a rebellious idea, then no matter what he says today, he must be stopped for the sake of the Confucian sages!!!]

While more than 7,000 Confucian scholars below were thinking wildly, Yan Changqing on the high platform asked again:

"Can the Confucian governing philosophy of benevolent government, moral governance, and emphasis on etiquette and music be able to govern a country?"

The more than 7,000 Confucian scholars below looked at me and I looked at you. They each swallowed their saliva and wanted to speak.

However, on the one hand, I am worried about becoming the first person.

On the other hand, I was worried that I would be too nervous to speak inappropriately in front of thousands of Confucian scholars and make jokes.

Furthermore, usually they can only speak freely in front of three, five, or ten friends from their classmates.

At this time, it takes great courage to express your thoughts and opinions loudly in a gathering of thousands of people.

And this kind of courage is not available to most people.

On the high platform, Yan Changqing glanced at the more than 7,000 Confucian scholars below who had not responded, and a flash of disappointment flashed in his eyes as he said:

"Is this the Confucian scholar today?!!"

"Don't you even have the guts to publicly admit and affirm the Confucian philosophy of governing the country for thousands of years?!!"

Just when Yan Changqing was thinking about whether he should let a group of Jin Yiwei disguised as scholars take the initiative to cooperate with him so that the scene could continue.

The scholar below, whose throat was about to tremble, could no longer restrain himself after being so provoked and ridiculed by Yan Changqing, and even someone shouted loudly:

"Yanqing Prefecture, Yongning County scholar Lin Zhaotang believes that 'applying benevolent government, practicing moral governance, and emphasizing etiquette and music' can govern the country!!!"

As soon as these words came out, Yan Changqing on the high platform, Song Lian in another pavilion, and all the other visible and invisible more than 7,000 talented scholars all looked towards the source of the sound.

Feeling the gazes of everyone around him, Lin Zhaotang, who had just shouted those words, was breathing rapidly, his cheeks were red, and he was speechless for a moment.

What does it mean to become famous all at once?!

This is called becoming famous in one fell swoop!!!

Because here and now, scholars from all over the world gather here.

In other words, whatever happens here now will also spread to all parts of the world with the scholars present here in the future.

So no matter where Lin Zhaotang scholar from Yanqing Prefecture and Yongning County can go in the future, but with the shout he just made, his name is bound to be spread when other scholars talk about today's events. All over the world.

Well, at least he is famous in the Confucian circles all over the world.

And a good reputation, a big reputation, not to mention a scholar, even for an official, is very important.

Otherwise, officials would not talk about "nurturing hope".

So after Lin Zhaotang shouted this sentence, other scholars were either ridiculed or stimulated by Yan Changqing's words, or they realized the benefits of Lin Zhaotang's words.

Immediately one of them spoke louder than the other:

"Zhending Prefecture, Dingzhou, and Quyang County scholar Bi Yuan believed that "applying benevolent government, practicing moral governance, and emphasizing etiquette and music" can govern the country!!!"

"Huai'an Prefecture, Haizhou Scholar, Yang Yuanhan believes that Confucian ideas can govern the country!!!"

"Wang Zongxian, a Yongnian scholar in Quang Binh Prefecture, believes that the Confucian philosophy of 'administering benevolent government, practicing moral governance, and emphasizing etiquette and music' can govern the country!!!"

But in the blink of an eye, the entire venue erupted with the shouts of more than 7,000 talented scholars announcing their names.

Seeing this scene, Song Lian, who was frowning, couldn't help but snorted:

"Humph, I am still a Confucian scholar after all!!!"

If these Confucian scholars today do not even have the courage to publicly acknowledge and affirm the Confucian ideas of governing the country, then he will really have to consider whether to expel these scholars from the Confucian family!!!

Looking at the excited scholars below, Yan Changqing nodded with satisfaction. This was exactly the praise he wanted.

It took a long time until almost all the scholars reported their names and publicly acknowledged and affirmed that the Confucian ideals of "administering benevolent government, practicing morality and emphasizing etiquette and music" can govern the country gradually subsided.

Yan Changqing just looked at the scholar who was the first to speak, and asked gently:

"I just heard from Lin Zhaotang, a scholar from Yanqing Prefecture and Yongning County, that you can govern a country by practicing benevolent government, practicing moral governance, and emphasizing etiquette and music. So what do you think should be used to govern the country by benevolent government?!!"

Standing among the talented scholars, Lin Zhaotang did not expect that the literary sage Cang Jie had actually remembered his name and even asked him questions in public!!!

The other scholars also looked at him with envy and jealousy, regretting that they were not the first to speak.

Otherwise, the person who is now famous in public and remembered and asked questions by the literary saint Cang Jie is himself.

Lin Zhaotang took a few deep breaths, forced himself to calm down, and replied loudly:

"Light corvee and low taxes, reduced sentences and lenient administration!!!"

Confucian scholars like them know very well how to implement benevolent government.

I don’t know how many times it has been mentioned in the sages’ books. This is simply a question for giving points.

This time, Lin Zhaodan gave his answer full marks!!!

On the high platform, Yan Changqing nodded, and then asked further:

“Since you said ‘lighten corvees and reduce taxes, reduce sentences and liberalize policies’, then what kind of corvees should be lightened, what taxes should be reduced, what penalties should be reduced, and what policies should be relaxed?!!”

"And if it is light corvee, then the construction of city defenses in the border areas, the dredging and construction of rivers all over the world, etc., must be put on hold?!"

"What if the city defense construction on the border is shelved and foreign enemies invade?!!"

"What if dredging and construction of rivers all over the world are put on hold, leading to droughts and floods?!!"

"And what if the taxes are too thin and the government's fiscal revenue is insufficient to pay the civil and military officers and soldiers?!!"

"And what if the punishments are reduced and the policies are relaxed, so that the gangsters in the world no longer fear the "Ming Law" and act recklessly and commit evil?!!"

One question after another made Lin Zhaotang hesitant and difficult to answer.

After all, in the final analysis, he is just a scholar, not even a county magistrate.

How can he answer these questions involving specific practical matters.

In other words, he could answer that that was something abnormal.

Seeing that Lin Zhaotang could not answer his question, Yan Changqing looked at the scholar on the other side again, and then asked:

"Just now I also heard Bi Yuan, a scholar from Zhending Prefecture, Dingzhou, and Quyang County, who said that a country can be governed by benevolent government, moral governance, and emphasis on etiquette and music. So what do you think should be done to govern talents through virtue? Can you govern a country?!!"

“If we use virtue to cure evil, how can we cure good?!”

"If good and evil have the same virtue, then what good can good and evil do?!!"

"If there is no distinction between good and evil, then why should we respect the good and avoid the evil?!!"

Bi Yuan, another scholar in the group, was so nervous that he sweated profusely when he heard the question from St. Cang Jie on the high platform.

He is also just a scholar, so how can he answer specific moral governance measures.

And the next three questions are even more deadly.

Because those three questions are based on the words in "The Analects of Confucius·Xianwen" by Confucius's disciples and his disciples:

"One might say: 'How to repay evil with kindness?' The Master said: 'How to repay kindness? Repay evil with straightness, repay kindness with kindness.'"

Meaning: Someone asked Confucius: "How about repaying resentment with kindness?"

After hearing this, Confucius did not answer directly, but asked: "If you use kindness to repay resentment, what should you use to repay kindness? Therefore, you should use integrity to repay resentment, and kindness to repay kindness."

Here Cang Jie asked what he meant: "If we use morality to influence and educate evil people, then what can we use to influence and educate kind people?!!"

"If we treat evildoers and kind-hearted people with the same moral influence and education, then what is the difference between evil-doers and kind-hearted people?!!"

"If there is no difference between evildoers and kind people, then why should we respect kind people and taboo evildoers?!!"

Of course, when faced with Cang Jie’s question, the best answer is Confucius’ reply

Answer 447: “Repay vengeance with straightness and repay kindness with kindness!!!”

However, "repaying grievances directly" is not in line with "governing by virtue"!!!

The idea of the rule of virtue is that "regardless of whether human nature is good or evil, morality can be used to influence and educate people!!!"

This is also the reason why most Confucian scholars only say "repay evil with kindness" and rarely say "repay evil with straightness and repay kindness with kindness".

Because this is not in line with the Confucian idea of governing by virtue, and if you "repay evil with virtue", you can still get your own "good reputation".

If you "retaliate directly", you may be accused of being narrow-minded by others.

Therefore, even if Confucius said the phrase "repay grievances directly," most Confucian scholars have selectively forgotten it.

But if we do not "repay grievances with kindness" but "repay grievances with kindness", then the question will become "how to repay kindness".

It's okay to let Song Lian answer such a question. As for letting him, a mere young scholar, answer it, Bi Yuan just wanted to say that he was really too high-minded.

Looking at Bi Yuan who was also unable to answer, Yan Changqing did not continue to question him, and then asked about the third scholar whose name he still remembered:

"Just now I also heard Yang Yuanhan, a scholar from Huai'an Prefecture and Haizhou, saying that a country can be governed by 'administering benevolent government, practicing moral governance, and emphasizing etiquette and music'." [So what do you think should be done collectively?

How can a country be governed only by rituals and music?!!”

"Nowadays, the remaining forces of the Northern Yuan Dynasty are still eyeing our Ming Dynasty outside the northern Xinjiang. They value rituals and music. Is it possible to withdraw the swordsmen, secure the captives and cavalry, and protect the people?!!"

Yang Yuanhan, another member of the group of talented scholars, was also speechless.

Today, the Ming Dynasty has just been a country for more than ten years, and he is in his early thirties. He can be said to have grown up in the chaotic times of the late Yuan Dynasty.

If paying attention to rituals and music can drive away soldiers, pacify captives, and protect the people, then there will be no chaos in the late Yuan Dynasty.

After asking the three scholars, Yan Changqing did not continue to ask.

Because these three scholars were the quickest to announce their names before, he heard them most clearly, so he remembered their names.

As for the scholar who announced his name later, more than 7,000 people spoke in a chaotic manner at the same time. It was strange that he could hear clearly.

Seeing that Literary Saint Cang Jie had no intention of continuing to ask questions, the remaining more than 7,000 talented scholars could not help but breathe a sigh of relief.

At the same time, I couldn't help but feel glad that the person who took the lead in announcing his name just now was not me, otherwise I would be the one being questioned by Wen Sheng Cang Jie now.

It is not an honor to be unable to answer a question in front of more than 7,000 scholars.
