Chapter 717: The Surveillance Target
Chapter 717: The Surveillance Target
After Good Night wolfed down two plates of grilled meat and watermelon in a frantic frenzy, then downed a big mug of draft beer to wash it down and looked like he could still keep eating normally, Lin Yu couldn't help but wonder if Good Night had also gotten a Banquet Pendant or some similar item. That peninsula might be small, but it sure had something going for it.
Even though Good Night seemed like he hadn't been there in a long time, he still had a bloodline-boosted special attack on those two ingredients—grilled meat and watermelon.
Watching Good Night wipe his mouth with a tissue, Lin Yu asked, "But, Team Leader Good Night, why did you guys come to this hot spring hotel?"
"Was it just to give the new Paper Kite comrade a chance to relax?"
Good Night curled his lips. "Not really... it's a surveillance mission—shit, top brass assigned it. Headquarters called me directly on my phone—Professor himself called."
Lin Yu was shocked.
"Who's important enough for that?"
"Not exactly a nobody, but not a super heavy hitter either. Just happens to be tied up in something big—don't worry too much. If it were someone really powerful, they wouldn't have sent just us two to tail them. At least, either it wouldn't be the two of us, or it wouldn't be surveillance."
"And don't get all tense just because Professor called. He likes to micromanage."
As Good Night spoke, Paper Kite said, "Can you tell him about this?"
"Shit, he's my assistant team leader, handpicked by Li Hua, and shit, he's even got the Grandmaster's recommendation. Why the hell can't I tell him?" Good Night looked at Paper Kite. "Come on, Old Qi, can't you have a little sensitivity? No wonder you started so high up and keep getting sent to the boonies now!"
"This guy is the most direct of direct descendants, the most trusted of confidants. If anyone in the Jiangcheng branch can't be trusted... it sure as hell isn't him," Good Night said firmly. "Even if Headquarters said one of us two is a mole, I'd rather suspect I unknowingly betrayed the organization myself."
As Good Night said this, Paper Kite gave a slight nod.
"I see." He looked at Lin Yu and offered another apologetic smile. "Sorry, don't take what I said earlier to heart."
Lin Yu didn't mind and waved it off. "No worries. If the mission's important, it's good to be cautious."
Even though Paper Kite had suspected him, it was precisely that suspicion that made Lin Yu find him even more trustworthy.
Thinking about how he'd even executed an Order member, Lin Yu fell into thought...
"Strong in combat, willing to suspect fellow Order comrades, and bold enough to act against his own organization... If there's really a purge of moles, he'd be a good ally."
Lin Yu looked back at Good Night. "But, Team Leader, if you're on a surveillance mission, how come you're eating and drinking in the hotel buffet?"
"And drinking alcohol? That's way too relaxed, isn't it?"
Good Night sighed at that. "Ah, just a little drink—mainly because this mission isn't really that dangerous or urgent, and tonight's situation is shit special!"
"Shit, we Order members are flesh-and-blood people too, with seven emotions and six desires," Good Night said, pointing at Paper Kite. "This kid just got dumped."
Paper Kite stayed silent at that, just quietly sipping his beer. "I didn't."
"Shit, who're you trying to fool? You were on your phone in your room just fine, then suddenly you were restless, pacing around, then you opened your game app, stared at it for a bit without playing, and closed it again," Good Night said bluntly. "If a woman didn't dump you, what else could it be?"
Paper Kite sighed. "Don't talk nonsense. I got dumped one year, two months, and fourteen days ago."
Then, as if remembering something, he picked up his phone. "Oh, it's already past midnight by seventeen minutes, so now it's one year, two months, and fifteen days."
Lin Yu watched the bitter smile and the shift in his tone before and after, diligently memorizing it all for his "heartbreak, regret, dumped" performance material library.
Then Lin Yu asked, "So what did you see?"
"She married someone else."
As Paper Kite said this, Lin Yu and Good Night both fell silent at the same time.
Then Good Night poured himself another full mug of beer.
"Shit, enough said. Ah, enough said. Bottoms up."
With that, Good Night downed it in one go.
Then he stiffly looked at Lin Yu and changed the subject. "Shit, why are you here at this hot spring hotel eating in the middle of the night?"
"Oh, my older sister passed away last week. I came to clear my head too."
Lin Yu replied.
Good Night froze. "Shit, bro, this... you... I... ah shit, damn!"
He filled another big mug of draft beer and downed it in one gulp.
Paper Kite looked at Lin Yu and patted him on the shoulder.
"My condolences. Take it easy for a while. I'll help you write a request to the organization."
Lin Yu gave a silent smile. "Thanks, I've already moved on."
"And I think it's better to keep busy... Since I ran into you guys, I'll help with the surveillance too."
"So who exactly is it, and what's the deal?"
As Lin Yu spoke, Paper Kite hesitated about whether to answer, but Good Night suddenly raised his hand.
"Ah, telling you won't hurt—and the target just started moving!"
"The sensor I put at my door went off!"
Good Night said, then pulled out an electronic screen from his pocket.
"I already had the forum tech guys hack into the hotel's hallway cameras... the one at room 8082 is the target."
As he spoke, Lin Yu leaned in to look and immediately spotted a familiar figure again.
"Huh? The Master Thief?!"
The young girl in the hallway, shuffling along in hotel slippers and a loose jacket like an old man—who else could it be but Li Nian?
"Good eye, yep, it's the Master Thief," Good Night said solemnly. "We've got to keep a close watch on her."
Lin Yu was a bit confused. "What, what big trouble could she cause?"
"She stole Chris's Siren's Blessing."
Paper Kite said gravely.
Lin Yu was even more surprised. "Does Chris have that much pull?"
"Of course it's not about him. It's that the Siren's Blessing absolutely can't fall into the Master Thief's hands," Paper Kite explained. "More precisely, it absolutely can't fall into the Free Alliance's hands!"
"The Free Alliance has an expert whose roots are also in Pure Abyss. I don't know his code name, but he's been stuck at Third Tier for a long time... And based on analysis of the Free Alliance's past movements, the key to that expert breaking through to Fourth Tier should be collecting the 'Nine Great Treasures' of the Pure Abyss realm."
"The Siren's Blessing is one of them... Only four of these Nine Great Treasures are confirmed to be in players' hands!"
"And in the week and two weeks before the Siren's Blessing was stolen, two other 'treasures' also went missing!"
"Headquarters obviously doesn't want the Free Alliance to gain another Fourth Tier expert, so of course they want to tail this Master Thief—from our intel, we know she hasn't handed the Siren's Blessing over to the person in the Free Alliance who needs it yet!"
